M2:2 Personal Care Products

1.) Secret Invisible Solid Women's Antiperspirant & Deodorant, Powder Fresh

        Score: 4

Health Risks: multiple, additive exposure sources, irritation (skin, eyes, or lungs), miscellaneous, organ system toxicity (non-reproductive) persistence and bioaccumulation; contamination concerns; cancer, data gaps, ecotoxicology, endocrine disruption, neurotoxicity

New Knowledge: I had no idea that there were health risks to trying to smell good. I had no idea about the contamination concerns or cancer concerns in this product

         * I am surprised that the toxicity rating of this personal care product was a 4 but I am not sure what the maximum rating is? A 1 would be great though!

         * I decided to not change my consumer behavior on this product YET. I just want to smell good

         * Yes, everyone should know the risks in Secret deodorant because they are putting it on their bodies everyday, sometimes multiple times a day. People do not know about the risks because it is not advertised anywhere on the product that I can see on the front. Advertisement like that will plummet sales for the producer

2.) Clean & Clear Morning Burst Facial Scrub

         Score: 5

Health Risks: endocrine disruption, contamination concerns, irritation (skin, eyes, or lungs), miscellaneous, occupational hazards, persistence and bioaccumulation; biochemical or cellular level changes, organ system toxicity (non-reproductive), enhanced skin absorption, cancer, data gaps, ecotoxicology

New Knowledge: I have sensitive skin and I thought I was doing it a favor by washing it every morning with this product, but turns out, I have been giving my face a toxic wash in the mornings. "occupational hazards" alarms me as well. anything with "hazards" in it that goes on your face is a red flag to me.

          * I am surprised ( but I shouldn't be at this point) that the score is a 5. I am guessing that the higher number is really bad. My poor face!

          * I have decided to change my consumer behavior with this product! Since my skin is sensitive, I am going to look for a "homemade/natural" face cleanser. I have seen some recipes on Pinterest like sugar scrubs so I am for sure going to DIY something.

          * Yes, people should know about the health risks about this product because they are putting it on their face daily. Most people do not know about the risks of this product because I believe it is a well known brand and again, the advertising says nothing on the front about the health risks of this product.

  1. Hahaha Rudi! I agree- we just want to smell good! I also use Secret deodorant and am planning to continue use since I don't feel that it is too threatening to my health- it mainly highlighted the impact of fragrance and irritations which I have no reaction to. With your face scrub- I'm sorry to hear this! I love the idea of you making your own scrub. I have a coworker who does this and gave me some, it felt great!

  2. Hey Rudi,
It's scary to know that something necessary like deodorant scored a 4! I agree that products should start labeling the dangerous ingredients, but it would ultimately need to be from a mandatory law because companies most likely don't want to advertise it! I feel that more natural and safe products should be advertised more attacking other brands for their dangerous chemicals so that more people would be aware!
